The First Noel | Sherrie Buscemi

But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord, wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:10-11 NIV

More than 2,000 years later, celebrations still abound to honor this ONE historical birth. We decorate, party, give gifts, fellowship, and break bread together.

This year, colorful lights are strung around my ceilings and on a tree filled with family memories. On top of the entertainment center, my husband set up his Christmas village, complete with an airport and landing lights. The hutch features a happy snowman family, and a Snoopy family.

By the time I tumble out of bed, timers have already turned it all on. My eyes twinkle as I behold those lights and festive scenes during my morning routine. It’s all so much fun and joyful.

But the manager on the buffet always gives me pause, for nothing else matters without the Nativity.

It makes me want to shout, "Happy Birthday, Jesus!" The First Noel has been proclaiming this since at least the 16th or 17th century!

🎶Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

Born is the King of Israel.🎶

The French version of this song is called Aujourd'hui le Roi des Cieux. It’s sung to the same tune but with different words:

🎶Today the King of Heaven in the middle of the night

Was born on Earth of the Virgin Mary

To save the human race, pull it from sin

Return the Lord's lost children to him.

Noël, Noël, Noël, Noël🎶

This IS the reason for the season of Christmas: Jesus left His home in heaven, and was born on earth to save us!

A lesser-known verse wraps up some English versions with this powerful lyric:

🎶Then let us all with one accord

Sing praises to our heavenly Lord

That hath made heaven and earth of naught

And with His blood mankind hath bought.🎶

And, so dear readers, would you take a deep breath with me right now to sing praises to our Jesus, our Savior, together? Because His birth from heaven to earth gave us the best of all gifts, the opportunity for new birth in our lives -- from lost to saved! Noel! Noel! Noel!

"Happy Birthday Jesus! We welcome you with hearts of gratitude for being our greatest gift. We honor and worship you today as our Savior and Lord. Thank you for giving us New Life; being our Prince of Peace; Our Living Hope; Our Friend. We love you!"

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38 The thrill of opening the fat envelope from my fiancé quickly turned into salty hot tears as I read the first paragraph: “Dear Sherrie and Terri, They say white lies are terrible, but I need to tell you both about my black lie. Terri, I am engaged to marry Sherrie. Sherrie, I have been having an...

“But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.”‭‭ Luke‬ ‭6‬:‭35‬ ‭(ESV)‬‬ Enemies is such a strong word. We are not at war. We do not take up weapons ready to defeat those who threaten our very existence. It may be easy to read Jesus’ words about enemies and gloss over them. We do, however, have people who cause something to boil within us. People...
